It is always a good idea if you are able to put them in the room or area where the subject of your investigation is as they will make you feel as you were in the room with that person. Luckily today the recording devices come into different shapes and sizes that no one would ever suspect in, such as pens, lighters or even watches, which make things so much easier.

A good working car is also a must. What is the point of tracking somebody with a car that can die on you at any time?! Make sure the car is always full and up and running. It is preferable to use a car that has a GPS device in case you get lost. It is not a good idea to have to ask the person you are tracking for instructions. In the back of your car put an overnight bag. Sometimes the surveillance can last longer than expected and nights can be very cold. When the night falls you will definitely need a battery jump. The flashlight of your car can be a little too obvious. Another thing a private investigator must always have is food and water. If you are dehydrated or hungry you might start seeing things. Ending in a hospital for malnutrition is never a good option. One thing that private investigators tend to forget is toiletries. They too are people with needs and hygiene must be at the highest level especially if you are on the stake-out for a longer period of time.

Credit cards won’t do much for you, as if you are tracing somebody in a place that is a bit cut off from the rest of the world, the chances are you won’t be able to find a cash machine.
