Getting A Diploma

The basic requirement to become a private investigator is that the applicant has a high school diploma. Having just a diploma may not allow applicants to specialize but it can get them through general training.

A private investigator seeking to specialize in crime investigation would be required to get certification in CSI (Crime Scene Investigation). Crime scene investigators are taught how to collect forensic evidence in providing useful information for solving a crime. Necessary education required to be certified in CSI would be having a Bachelor’s in forensic biology, forensic science, or forensic anthropology.

With these or related certifications, schools give such students an opportunity to complete the 2-year CSI program. With the background qualifications in the sciences, it is easier for such student to have several opportunities in CSI.

Obtaining Online Courses

There are also varied courses that can be taken online to boost qualification. The internet has availed more opportunities for individuals would may not have the time to register at schools to get certified online. This is an optional requirement and not mandatory to become a private investigator.

Experience Is An Added Advantage

Most private investigators today have background training from the military or police force. Companies are comfortable hiring private investigators with related background, especially when the job entails the use of firearms. While this is not a basic requirement, individuals that have worked as bodyguards or have experience in a private company also have same advantage.

The nature of the job and the industry one finds himself determines what will be required from the individual. All aspects of private investigation will require surveillance training. This is because the core of being a private investigator is being able to carry out an effective surveillance on prospects.

Getting Licensed

To be qualified as an operational private investigator, one would have to get the licensed by the authoritative body. For any surveillance or investigations to be carried out, there has to be SIA licensing. This means that anyone involved in investigation services, from employers, employees, supervisors, managers, to partners, would all require a license.
